A Boston medal for an Atlanta friend

ATLANTA -- Atlanta has always had a very vibrant running community.

However, over the last 40 years one man has been the Pied Piper of his own local version of Hamelin.

In 1973, Jeff Galloway finished fifth in the Boston Marathon. And on Monday night, he gathered about 100 friends and customers from Phidippides Atlanta, his running store in Ansley Mall, to run for Boston.

It was a night of meaning for those who live for running and love the symbol of their sport -- the Boston Marathon.

"I'm changing when all of a sudden a huge explosion and it was like a war zone," Dennis Murray said.

The war zone for the Johns Creek resident was the finish line. He just cleared the area long enough to collect his seventh Boston Marathon medal

"Sirens came and everything else, and I tried to find my wife in 45 minutes and it was panic city," he said.

Mike Wien and his friend Bishop Leatherbury were there too. They traveled to run and they did.

Free Hawks playoffs tickets hidden around Atlanta

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks have made it to the NBA Playoffs for the sixth year in a row, and the team is celebrating with a fun scavenger hunt for fans.

The Hawks will hide 50 foam fingers at various places throughout Atlanta on Thursday and Friday. Each finger will hold two tickets to a Hawks home game.

Fans who find the fingers are invited to tweet pictures of themselves with the hashtag #PlayoffFever. Everyone who tweets will be entered into a drawing to win VIP seats and a Hawks jersey signed by Josh Smith.

The Hawks have provided a few clues about where they plan to hide some of the fingers:

1. One of NBC's Thursday night comedies contains the name of several locations.

2. One location's tagline is "Weekends are overrated."

3. The Hawks plan to connect the East, West, North and South at one location.

2013 Georgia Rides to the Capitol to raise cycling support

ATLANTA -- The 2013 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event will be held through the city on Tuesday, March 26.

A spokeswoman for the ride said more than 1,000 cyclists are expected to participate, as part of the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association "GEORGIA BIKES!" program. The bike ride will be escorted by police, and run track through Decatur and Roswell. Leading the pack will be Commissioner Fred Boykin and Mayor Jere Wood, along with more city officials.

During the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists hope to raise support for other types of transportation through the metro region. Plus, they hope conditions will improve to allow easier cycling, including the development of regional systems and both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use trails.

Atlanta-area residents win Publix Ga. Marathon

ATLANTA -- Sunday's Publix Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon was an enormous success, with more than 16,000 racers running up and down the streets of Atlanta.

A local resident won first place in the marathon. Malcolm Campbell of Marietta earned a time of 2:26:11. He improved upon his time of 2:31:26 in the Atlanta Marathon last October, where he finished second.

"It was a tremendously challenging course," Campbell said after Sunday's race. "The weather was a huge help for the runners today."

Jill Horst of Rome won her second consecutive Publix Georgia Marathon women's first place with a time of 2:54:24.

Atlanta resident Andrew Heath placed first in the half marathon with a time of 1:09:55. Justyna Mudy of Rome won the women's half marathon at 1:18:50.

Fulton residents encouraged to 'Walk Ga.'

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension wants all residents to develop regular physical activity habits, get healthier and have fun while “walking across Georgia”. Daily activities such as walking the dog, going for a jog and playing catch with the kids quickly add up to virtual miles that are used to “walk” across the state.

“We invite all residents who made New Year’s resolutions to get fit and be healthier to join our initiative,” says Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Although this event is called Walk Georgia, any form of activity can be logged to track mileage. The primary goal is to get moving.”

Frosty 5K a huge success

ATLANTA -- This year's Inman Middle School Frosty 5K was lots of fun for everyone involved.

More than 500 runners turned out to the Virginia-Highland middle school on Dec. 8 to raise money by running to the Old Fourth Ward skate park and back.

Victor Breedveld, 39, was the overall winner with a time of 17:24, while 36-year-old Jesseca Kepper won the women's race with a time of 20:07.

Inman's fastest runner was 12-year-old Jacob Dillard, who crossed the finish line in 21:02. The quickest Inman lady was 11-year-old Selena Kleber with a time of 25:58.

Frosty 5K to benefit Inman MS

ATLANTA -- Run a jolly holiday 5K to raise money for Inman Middle School in Virginia-Highland.

The 4th annual Inman Frosty 5K will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. The race course winds along the BeltLine and takes runners from the school to the Old Fourth Ward skate park and back.

Race entry is $25 until Nov. 30 and $30 after. Students in grades K-12 run for $10; enter the password "eagles" at checkout to get the discount. Inman Middle School teachers and staff members run for free.
