Documentary on tobacco addiction comes to Fulton County

ATLANTA -- Tobacco use is responsible for 87% of lung cancer deaths, most cases of chronic obstructive disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, 21% of all coronary heart diseases and kills more than 400,000 Americans each year, with about 700 of those deaths occurring in Fulton County.

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Voters can “Vote and Vax” beginning Saturday, October 27, 2012.  Voters can cast their ballots and obtain their annual flu slots as a part of an effort to reduce the risk of flu among citizens.  Vote and Vax primarily targets adults aged 50 or older.

ATLANTA -- According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer among Georgia women. On October 17, 2012, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, Division of Women’s Health will rock to “Motown Melodies” at its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event at the Adamsville Recreation Center where residents can get a free clinical breast exam, blood pressure checks, glucose and HIV screenings.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time we all can encourage the women we care about to get screened,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services.  “Early detection is key.”

ATLANTA -- Flu season is around the corner.  Fulton County Health Services encourages everyone to get vaccinated, especially children.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.  The Fulton Department of Health and Wellness is providing flu shots at seven centers from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. 

Residents can get a flu shot or the nasal mist (2 to 49 years) for $25.  Visa and Master Card (credit and debit), Medicaid, Cigna, United Health care and cash are accepted forms of payment. Flu vaccinations are available at the following health centers:

Fulton County to Conduct Barrier Sprayings to Increase West Nile Virus Prevention Efforts

FULTON COUNTY -- Fulton County Health Services will begin barrier spraying areas identified as sites where mosquitoes tested positive as carriers of the West Nile Virus. In preparation for the concert at Wolf Creek Amphitheater being held on Saturday, September 1, 2012, Health Services will barrier spray the venue in order to best protect citizens and visitors attending the concert. The spraying will have no adverse effect on the health of concert goers, residents or businesses located in the surrounding area.

Barrier Spraying is considered an adulticide.  The process includes delivering a chemical called Permethrin as a fine mist onto foliage and surrounding vegetation in the affected areas.

The Atlanta Commission on Women (ACW), in partnership with various organizations including self-defense/protection company Practical Combat Applications, Atlanta Police Dept., and Health, Fitness & Life Coaching--will host a free Women's Health and Safety Forum, Wed. Aug. 28, 12PM noon at Atlanta City Hall.

Focusing on the topics: self-defense, diabetes, heart disease, fitness/nutrition, HIV/AIDS, obesity and preventive care; the free forum will take place in the old city hall chambers (3rd floor, city hall tower) on 68 Mitchell St, Atlanta. The public is invited.

The event will also feature: the Atlanta Fire Dept, AID Atlanta, Cynthia Jameson, Independent agent for health insurance and durable medical equipment, Pulse by Kayt Wolfe, and Sonali Sadeqee Nutrition and Lifestyle consultant.

Fulton County Invites Veterans to Attend Resource Forum

Veterans of all branches of the military are invited to attend a Resource Forum on Tuesday, August 21 starting at 11:00am at the North Fulton Service Center located at 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, GA.   The event is sponsored by Fulton County Health Services to inform veterans about services available for them and their families.  

 

The special forum is for current and former members of the US Armed Forces and their family members.  Attendees will receive information about accessing primary care, behavioral health, substance abuse, and social services resources in Fulton County.  The forum will also feature presentations from 11:00am – 12:30pm by three leading veteran’s organizations, Veterans Heart Georgia, BraveHeart and the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
