Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmers Market ends season Aug. 27

FULTON COUNTY, ga. -- On Wednesday, August 27 at 10 a.m., Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the successful fourth season of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market. This year, the program provided approximately 31.5 tons of fresh produce to more than 6,900 residents in 24 Fulton County communities.

The celebration will take place at Berean seventh Day Adventist Church located at 291 Hamilton E. Holmes Drive, Atlanta and is open to all Fulton County residents.

The closing ceremony will include comments from Chairman John Eaves, Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Valeria Pickard, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Fulton Fresh was founded in 2011 as part of Fulton County’s continuous effort to address health disparities. Communities served by the seasonal program benefit from the delivery of fresh produce, nutrition education and were taught how to prepare tasty, healthy meals with the produce they received.

All About Developmental Disabilities to hold workshop series on sexuality

DECATUR, Ga. -- This fall, All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) will host a four-part workshop series on sexuality and developmental disabilities. Parents and adults with developmental disabilities will learn about sexuality, how parents can support their child’s sexual behavior and romantic relationships, and how to handle sex on the Internet and in other media.

The sessions will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 26, Sept. 23, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18. All sessions will be held at AADD’s Family Support Center, 125 Clairemont Avenue Suite 300, Decatur. The cost is $10 per session.

Workforce Investment Act Board Task Force meeting scheduled for Monday

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Workforce Preparation and Employment System – Workforce Investment Act Board (FCWPES-WIA) Board Development, Visibility and Influence Committee Task Force will meet on Monday, August 18 at 2 p.m. in the Adamsville Regional Health Center on the second floor.

The Adamsville Regional Health Center is located at 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta.

The FCWPES-WIA Board oversees activities related to providing an environment that supports a skilled and trained workforce and creating innovative programs that serve the changing needs of employers and the business community.

WIA helps Georgia move toward a comprehensive, customer-focused workforce investment system where Job Seeker and Employer customers alike can access a wide range of workforce-related tools and information needed to manage their work activities. Services are provided through a network of One-Stop Centers statewide.

Fulton County youth receive school supplies as costs rise

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Shopping for back to school supplies can present challenges for parents trying to make ends meet and the outlook is not improving. Huntingdon Bank’s Annual Backpack Index reports double digit increases in school supply costs.

As Fulton County, Atlanta and other metro Atlanta schools prepare to open for the fall, Fulton County Commission Chairman John H. Eaves, the Fulton County Office of Children and Youth and Fulton County Health and Wellness sponsored a back to school event on Tuesday, July 29 to help parents to obtain needed school supplies.

The event at Atlanta Technical College featured school supply giveaways and free haircuts along with information and education. The event attracted 500 participants with 224 children receiving haircuts and 300 taking home school supplies.

ATLANTA -- A debut novelist will read from his book about the inventor of the Theremin next month in Virginia-Highland.

Sean Michaels is the author of Us Conductors and also blogs at Said the Gramophone. His Atlanta appearance will be shared with Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel, a local duo that will show off the instrument at the center of the novel.

Us Conductors tells the story of Lev Termen, a Soviet scientist who creates the Theremin and falls in love with its finest player, Clara Rockmore. He builds his name while working as a music teacher in New York City, but soon returns to Russia and is imprisoned in a Siberian gulag before being brought to Moscow to eavesdrop on Joseph Stalin.

Atlanta BeltLine to host bicycle tour this weekend

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership will team up with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition for a tour this weekend.

The 7th annual Atlanta BeltLine Bicycle Tour will be held Saturday, June 14. Staggered rides through the BeltLine's 45 neighborhoods will begin at 9 a.m. from the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark.

Riders have a choice of two tours: the full BeltLine, which is 27 miles long; and the East Meets West route -- 16 miles of some of the trail's most beautiful parks.

Advance registration is $30 for members of the Atlanta BeltLine or Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and $35 for the general public. On-site registration opens at 8 a.m. and is $40 for members and $45 for non-members.

Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center to open June 19

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, District 5, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Fulton County Arts and Culture, will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center (ACCC) on Thursday, June 19 at 10 a.m.

The grand opening celebration will kick off three days of activities organized to introduce the new facility to the community and increase awareness of the center, its programming and activities. 

The center is located at 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta on the grounds of Fulton County Airport – Brown Field.  It is designed as a community gathering place and will focus on the following types of programming:
