Georgia Power honors local schools for efficient energy use

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County schools have received an honor from Georgia Power for their efficient use of energy.

The school system was given money from Georgia Power to install efficient energy equipment in two new high schools in the area. This year, Fulton County schools also took two major awards: the U.S. Green Building Council's Georgia Chapter was recognized for Leadership in Energy Efficiency for a School System, and the Leadership in Water Efficiency.

A spokeswoman for the Fulton County School System said part of receiving the honor is to maintain a high Energy Star rating. Fulton County averages a score of 87, and 57 of their 58 schools are Energy Star certified.

'Big Fish' author to read at Ivy Hall

ATLANTA -- A well-known Southern fantasy author will read from his latest novel in Atlanta next month.

Daniel Wallace recently published The Kings and Queens of Roam. He is best known for his first novel, Big Fish, which was made into a 2003 movie of the same name and will come to the Broadway stage later this year. He is also the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Wallace will discuss and sign copies of his new book on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. at SCAD Atlanta's Ivy Hall writing center. The event is free and open to the public.

His visit is sponsored by A Cappella Books, which provided a synopsis of The Kings and Queens of Roam:

National Drug Take-Back Day

It's an opportunity for those who have accumulated unwanted and unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of them.

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Take-Back Initiative takes place Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in various locations throughout the state.

In the five previous Take-Back events, the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with state, local, and tribal law enforcement partners, have collected more than two million pounds (1,018 tons) of prescription medication from circulation. The National Prescription Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of these medications.

Running around Metro Atlanta this weekend

ATLANTA - This weekend's race calendar includes runs in Norcross, Woodstock, Sandy Springs and Inman Park.

For the last weekend in April, runners can lace up their shoes starting Friday night.

The Atlanta edition of the Vampire 5K kicks off - for both vampires and citizens - Friday night at 7:45 at Six Flags Over Georgia. Racers will be able to pick up packets inside the pavilions underneath the Great American Scream Machine from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Race Day Registration is available for $55 per team or $60 per individual. ATLANTA – Parallel with a rising stock market, Atlanta area investors are optimistic about the prospects for their portfolios, growth of the global and US economies, and their ability to reach their financial goals, although mortgage foreclosures remain a major factor in the market[1].

Eight in 10 Atlanta investors expect their investment portfolio to be “better” or “the same” (83%) at year-end and slightly more (87%) believe their financial well-being will be the same or better.

Fulton Youth Commissioners to paint Springdale Place roof white to save energy and taxpayer dollars

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Youth Commissioners will visit Springdale Place Comprehensive Service Center for Homeless Women with Children on Saturday, April 27, 2013. The Youth Commissioners will take the lead in a project that will improve the Springdale Place building’s energy efficiency and save taxpayer dollars. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., Youth Commissioners will grab paintbrushes and other tools to paint the building’s roof white, which is in line with the “Cool Roof” concept.

According to the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), Cool roofs can “save energy, cool urban heat islands, and help slow global warming.” The Youth Commissioners’ “White Roof Project” will increase building cost efficiency by reducing the roof’s heat levels.

Anchorman 2 takes over iconic Manuel's Tavern

ATLANTA -- Manuel's Tavern shut down to the public Wednesday, yielding to a movie crew shooting Anchorman 2.

The sequel to the 70s-based movie bused in a couple of dozen extras, clad in comically dated clothes and hairstyles. Actor Paul Rudd was spotted entering the tavern's back door early Wednesday afternoon, along with David Koechner. A publicist for the movie said the shoot would conclude Wednesday.

Brian Maloof, general manager of Manuel's, wrote on the tavern's Facebook page "it
does feel odd. The setting of the movie is New York so all our Atlanta
pennants are down and have been replaced with NY teams."

Manuel's was opened in 1956 by Manuel Maloof, who went on to become DeKalb County CEO. The tavern is thick with dark wood and vintage decorations.
