Ambassador to Discuss Dynamics of Diplomatic Service April 1 at Spelman

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, director general of the Foreign Service and director of human resources for the U.S. Department of State, will address the dynamics of diplomatic service during a presentation titled, “Meeting Today's Global Challenges with 21st Century Diplomats,” at Spelman College, Monday, April 1, at 4:30 p.m. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield leads a team of 400 employees who carry out a range of personnel functions for the State Department’s 60,000-strong workforce − from recruitment and hiring, through evaluations and promotions, to retirement.

Local bikers ride to the capitol for safety awareness

(WXIA) -- Atlanta commuters may have noticed hundreds of bikers heading to the state capitol on Tuesday morning.

The ride was to raise awareness of safety for those who ride bikes to get around.

Atlanta cyclist Ryan Barnett remembers a horrifying experience - an evening accident on a beautiful summer day that almost cost the man his life. He was run over by a truck.

"I grew up riding bikes here in Atlanta and raced to the professional level and was hit by a car by in 2008," Barnett said.

The biker told 11Alive he was paralyzed from the chest down, and suffered a cracked skull, pelvis and ribs. Barnett spent nearly two months going through rehab at the Shepherd Center.  

Barnett, also a family man was at the top of his game - competing around the country. Now, he is bound to a wheelchair, making it his mission to get the word out to those on the road about the dangers that could lie on the road.

Local nonprofits win "Technology JumpStart your Nonprofit" contest

NORCROSS, Ga. -- Atlanta-based office solutions and technology services company Milner Inc. recently sponsored the "Technology JumpStart Your Nonprofit" contest, where two local companies won $35,000.

A spokesperson for Milner said the two winners were Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption of Smyrna and Wellspring Living on Tyrone. The winners were determined by an online voting tally of 80,000 votes. 

The $35,000 awards will be technology makeovers for the winners, aimed to improve the efficiency of the nonprofits' technological capabilities. Included in the prize may be telephony equipment, IT consulting services, ongoing network support and others. 

Executive Vice President of Milner, Charlie Gibson said, "Giving back to the organizations dedicated to serving our communities is something Milner feels privileged to do. The response was incredible. It's obvious from the voting these organizations have some very passionate supporters."

2013 Georgia Rides to the Capitol to raise cycling support

ATLANTA -- The 2013 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event will be held through the city on Tuesday, March 26.

A spokeswoman for the ride said more than 1,000 cyclists are expected to participate, as part of the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association "GEORGIA BIKES!" program. The bike ride will be escorted by police, and run track through Decatur and Roswell. Leading the pack will be Commissioner Fred Boykin and Mayor Jere Wood, along with more city officials. 

During the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists hope to raise support for other types of transportation through the metro region. Plus, they hope conditions will improve to allow easier cycling, including the development of regional systems and both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use trails.

JP Morgan Chase, Brookings Institution start Global Cities Initiative in Atlanta

(ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE) -- Metro Atlanta leaders will seek to grow the region's global business opportunities through a new initiative kicked off Wednesday by JP Morgan Chase and the Brookings Institution.

The Global Cities Initiative, which is part of a five-year, $10 million multi-city effort ultimately will forge new city-to-city partnerships to create trade and economic relationships to prosper from the growing urbanization of the world's population. 

Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed said the initiative takes advantage of growing businesses through exporting and by recognizing that the "Made in USA" brand is becoming increasingly valuable in the world. 

The two-day conference, held at the Academy of Medicine on the Georgia Tech Campus, will lead to a new Metropolitan Export Plan for Atlanta.
